FAQs

We appreciate that you may have a choice of firms to join as a consultant. But we’re pretty confident that our programme stacks up very well in comparison...

What is a consultant?

A consultant is a self-employed legal professional who is contracting to provide legal services through Taylor Rose, using our support and infrastructure and taking up to 75% of what they bill as their remuneration for their services.

What is a consultant contracting under an existing consultant?

A fee-earning consultant contracting under an existing consultant provides legal services under the banner of the Taylor Rose brand; however, they are not directly contracted with the firm. Instead, they are contracted and supervised by a consultant solicitor who can provide them with exposure, assist in building them up if necessary, and sign off on their work at critical stages.

Interested in becoming a consultant?

The financial rewards and freedom that come with consulting can make for a very enticing career move, so you’ll likely have questions about how consulting works and the support available.

Our consultant programme offers many different options depending on what your goals and ambitions are, so the first step is to contact our Consultant Acquisition Team, who will be able to go over the programme in more detail, including considerations, experience, and day to day practicing practicalities.

Interested in becoming a fee earning consultant contracting under an existing consultant?

If you’re thinking about becoming a consultant contracting under an existing consultant, you most likely have questions about how it generally works, the financial rewards, and the work available to you.

To take the first step towards becoming a fee-earning consultant under an existing consultant, please contact our Consultant Acquisition Team, whose details can be found below. The team will have an informal chat with you to go over initial suitability, and if this is the right option for you, they will arrange an interview with a consultant that they believe is the right fit for you and follow up after to see how you have gotten on.

Should I become a fee earning consultant contracting under an existing consultant?

Being a fee-earner contracting with an existing consultant means that you are not only able to do the job you love, but you can also work to suit your lifestyle. You can work your own timetable, deal with the referrers and workload that you want to, and also have the chance to take home profitable monthly figures.

You get to work your own caseload to your preference, which means that you can essentially manage it as you wish. You would not have to be dictated to by others on what work you can and cannot do or how you source your own work.

Can I become a fee earner contracting under an existing consultant with Taylor Rose?

If you have previous experience as a file handler and feel that you have both the knowledge and experience to deal with your own caseload and referrers, then you can contract with an existing consultant for Taylor Rose.

You do not need any qualifications because contracting with an existing consultant means that you have the benefit of working with a qualified solicitor who is available if you require assistance, knowledge, or just a helping hand or ear to discuss matters with.

What do I get for the fee split as a fee-earning consultant?

If you are non-qualified, you will usually receive a 50/50 split, with 30% going to Taylor Rose and 20% to your consultant solicitor. This is at the discretion of the consultant you are contracting with; however, 50% is the usual amount.

You also receive support from your designated technical head and consultant solicitor, and your acquisition executive will be able to go into more detail with you on the percentage splits and what support is offered at the time of your call.

What do you look for in a fee earner contracting with an existing consultant?

We look for people with their own following who have good legal knowledge and experience working independently.

It may be that you have the experience but do not have the correct qualifications to be a consultant solicitor. In other cases, you may have the qualifications but lack the experience of building up your own caseload and require some supervision and guidance.

How much could I earn as a consultant?

As a consultant, you can take home up to 75% of your billing, but what you earn from this will be dependent on the fee scales that you charge, the amount of caseload you carry, and the hours you work.

As a consultant, you have the ability to directly impact your earning potential, which is one of the most attractive aspects of the programme.

How much could I earn as a fee-earner contracting with an existing consultant?

This is dependent on how many hours you work, the type of work you source, and the fees you charge.

If you work hard, put in the hours, and use your knowledge and skills to provide excellent client service and communications, the possibilities are endless.

Do you have a minimum billing threshold?

Yes, and no.

We don’t like to set fixed targets in case they end up adversely impacting client service.

However, at the same time, staff, licences, and systems are all costly to provide, and we base our level of support on consultant numbers and revenue assumptions. So, we do need to see a certain level of billing to make sure the arrangement is sustainable for everyone involved and a financially stable decision for you. An acquisition executive can discuss this with you in an informal chat for more details and help you come to an informed decision.

What do I get for the fee split as a consultant?

As a qualified consultant with 4 years of PQE and above, you can take up to 75% of what you bill. If you are unqualified but experienced, we do still have other options within the programme, so don’t be afraid to get in touch and explore options with the consultant acquisition team.

Why should I choose Taylor Rose over other firms?

We’re confident that our offering stacks up very well compared to other firms.

We’re a top 60 law firm with a growing number of offices across England, including premium central London offices. We are well accredited and have an excellent track record of providing a first-rate platform for over 10 years that people love to be a part of.

We appreciate that you may have a choice of firms to join. All we ask is that you take a good look at what they’re offering, including the level and quality of back-office support and a community that spans over 500+ consultants and is growing.

If you need more information, please get in touch; you’re also welcome to chat with some of our current fee earners contracting under an existing consultant to learn more.

Can I speak to any of your existing consultants for reference?

Absolutely, and we are happy to arrange this for you. It is by far the best way to get a feel for the programme and what it’s like to work as part of it. One of our acquisition executives can put you in touch with an existing consultant and other consultants in your sector so you can get an idea of their experience.

Do you provide work?

We do have a large cross-referral network from our existing consultants and offer marketing consultations to put you in the best position to succeed and promote your services.

However, Taylor Rose does not guarantee inquiries or provide you with cases. If you are low on work, especially in the early days, you can ask the firm for assistance, but you are primarily responsible for sourcing your own referrers and cases. We do offer overflow from our employed department, but this is on an ad hoc basis, so you need to be comfortable with the self-generation of clients.

What are the downsides of becoming self-employed?

As a self-employed consultant, you are responsible for managing your own tax and national insurance payments. This also means that you must manage your finances pragmatically, as, unlike an employee, you are not paid if you take time off for holidays, maternity/paternity, or sickness.

Being a confident communicator is also critical, as it will help you win work for yourself and provide steady billing, which will form part of your take-home.

Being self-employed means that you can work as many hours as you wish, taking on as many clients as you can. But you still need to ensure you provide excellent client service. Your services, along with those of our employed solicitors, can be reviewed and published on independent websites such as Review Solicitors or Google Reviews. A negative review can have a huge impact on your workload, so you need to strive to consistently deliver quality service.

What happens if I leave the firm?

Much like if you worked as an employee, you would need to serve notice and work out your notice period. When you leave, you can take your work with you, but this shouldn’t include any work provided to you by the firm.

What’s the next step?

Call our Consultant Acquisition Team on 020 3551 8100 or email consultantrecruitment@taylor-rose.co.uk to arrange a meeting or a telephone call at a convenient time for you. From there, we can tell you a little more about the firm and our due diligence process.

We look forward to welcoming you to the firm.
