Becoming a consultant solicitor is an exciting step for solicitors and lawyers who want greater freedom, higher earnings, and a more balanced way of working. With the right firm behind you and a proactive approach to building your client base, you can enjoy a successful and fulfilling legal career on your own terms.
Before making the move, it’s important to consider whether you have an existing client base or the ability to generate new work. Are you motivated by autonomy and flexibility? Do you want to take home a larger share of your billings?
Our model is designed to remove the traditional barriers that hold solicitors and lawyers back, giving you the tools, structure, and support you need to succeed in your career.
Salim Chaudhry, Consultant Solicitor, shares his story of stepping into consultancy and what motivated him to move away from the traditional legal path and into legal consultancy.
‘Before becoming a consultant, I spent several years working in traditional legal practice, specialising in immigration law. I help individuals and families navigate critical legal processes such as leave to remain, indefinite leave to remain, British nationality, and spouse visas. Over time, I realised I wanted to provide a more personal, focused service, giving each client the time and attention their case deserves.
The decision to move into consultancy came from a desire for greater flexibility and control over my work. I wanted to practise in a way that reflected my values, delivering client-centred advice while also creating a healthier work-life balance. Consultancy allowed me to manage my own caseload, work mostly remotely while attending the office once a week, and adapt my schedule to suit both my wellbeing and family commitments.
The transition required planning and careful thought. I considered the clients I wanted to support and how to structure my practice to play to my strengths. A big and highly reputable firm, Taylor Rose, was the perfect place to start this journey. It provided both structure and flexibility, along with exposure to a wider professional network. I also make a point of attending events and connecting with other self-employed professionals and consultants. These opportunities have been invaluable. The other consultants I have met have been incredibly supportive, which means I never feel isolated, even while working independently.’
Salim’s journey is a great example of how legal consultancy can open the door to professional fulfilment while allowing space for personal growth.
With the backing of an established firm and a supportive culture, legal consultants can build meaningful client relationships and have the freedom to work in a way that truly fits their life and values.
