Does Covid Help or Hinder a Consultant?

Janine Moore, a consultant in our Private Client department since March 2021, discusses whether her career progression and workload was impacted throughout the pandemic.

“I gave up twenty plus years of private practice to become a Consultant with Taylor Rose in February of 2021. I specialise mainly in Wills, administration of estates and Powers of Attorney.”

“Some critics may say that wasn’t the best time to step away from a regular salary, but I saw a wonderful opportunity. In the twelve months before leaving private practice, I was working up to ten hours a day, seven days a week, trying to keep up with an unmanageable caseload, consoling bereaved families whilst dealing with my own family bereavements. My hair was falling out, my mental health was declining, my career progression was questionable and HR was nowhere to be seen.”

“Stepping away from my employed role has allowed me to take control of my caseload, and take care of my career progression and I have a better work-life balance now than I have had in years. The Coronavirus pandemic has not hindered my ability to work in any way but instead now put me in the driving seat.   There are no targets other than those I might choose to set myself. There is no overwhelming caseload that keeps me chained to the desk late into the evening and weekends for unpaid hours. My life now beats to the rhythm of my own drum.”

“I do not need a desk in an office setting. I have a home office instead. I make home visits to see my clients and have more time to spend really getting to know my clients and their families, improving my quality of service. I can provide a much more personal service and take time to truly understand my clients needs and the harsh realities that some of them are facing due to Covid and other traumatic illnesses.“

“When a family suffers a bereavement, they need a lawyer who has time to not only speak with them but to explain the probate process in a manner that they can understand without lots of legal and technical jargon. Consultancy gave me control over my own hours and how I use them, providing me the opportunity to focus on each individual client. I am proud to be that lawyer.”
