Becoming a Consultant Solicitor Working Part-Time

As a mother of two young boys, I knew that when I returned to work I would need a job that offered flexibility. A lot of traditional Law Firms were only offering full-time work (i.e. 9 – 5pm, 5 days a week) with little room for flexibility such as part-time hours or remote working. Becoming a Consultant Solicitor working part-time allowed me to break out of the usual work type.

One of my old work colleagues, Mark Quinn, mentioned that he’d started to work as a Consultant Solicitor for Taylor Rose. He said, that he’d spent some time building up his caseload and anticipated that he would soon need to employ another Consultant to run some files for him. He asked whether I would be interested in this.

Having heard how flexible work as a Consultant could be, I saw working for Mark as a great opportunity. After speaking to the firm, I found out the only thing needed of me to apply was two years of practical experience, so I jumped at the chance and haven’t regretted it since.

The benefits of being a Consultant Solicitor working part-time

My journey into the office used to take me around an hour each way on a busy train rammed full of early morning commuters. Now I work from the comfort of my own home and my office is arranged exactly how I like it.

The job offers me to work remotely with complete flexibility. I currently work part-time for a set number of hours each week. I am free to manage my own time and this fits in perfectly with my life as a mum.

I am still able to drop my kids off at nursery and I am there to pick them up at the end of each day. If the kids are ever ill and sent home from school – I don’t need to worry about how many sick days I have left to take and who will deal with my work in my absence, as I simply make my hours up in the evenings or at weekends.

There are no distractions or office politics to contend with and I’ve found that I have a much more varied caseload now. I’m not just stuck in one particular department dealing with the same cases day in, day out.

Starting out as a Consultant, working remotely with new systems can be daunting, but I have felt well supported by Taylor Rose. There is a Concierge team and company services like IT and Marketing also available.

Some people worry about losing out on the social benefits of office working. However, Taylor Rose have a great network of Consultants – so you do still feel as if you are part of a team, despite working remotely.

I would definitely recommend working part-time as a Consultant Solicitor to anyone looking for flexible work in law and a refreshing change from the usual 9 – 5pm routine.
